Cold Uterus and Infertility

By Dr. Yu Kang, Neighbor

A condition known as a "cold uterus" means that the uterine lining has not responded appropriately to the warming hormone (progesterone). Women with this condition usually have slow rising and/or early declining BBT (Basal Body Temperature). Cold hands and feet, dark and clotty menstrual blood, cramps helped by a heating pad, lower back pain, low sexual desire, and frequent urination at night. "Cold uterus" not only causes the wrong temperature for the embryo to grow, like a seed growing in chilly weather, but also inhibits uterine blood circulation. Women with this diagnosis often have a combination of patterns of kidney yang (the warming energy) deficiency and blood stasis.  The focus of treatment is to warm the uterus, which in turn maintains progesterone at satisfactory levels. This not only helps metabolic activity, but also allows the uterus to secrete sufficient nutrients, and thereby creates a highly nurturing environment in which to implant the embryo. When conception occurs, the embryo has less than a week to implant into the uterus. Implantation into the uterus provides a direct link to blood vessels, which supply vital nutrients to the developing embryo. This link has to be maintained until the placenta is formed at about 3 months into the pregnancy. Any weakness in the Uterus will result in miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) of the fetus. Common reasons of cold uterus include over consumption of cold temperature drinks and raw foods, especially during the menstrual cycle; staying in air-conditioned cars, rooms or cold weather too long; being a vegetarian, consumed too much cold-energy food, such as raw fruits and vegetables.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal prescriptions are fast and very effective to help "cold uterus" by tonify kidney yang and improve blood circulation. The treatment is in conjunction with dietary changes, such as eating warm-energy food, beef, lamb, ginger, cinnamon, curry, chive, green onion and black pepper; eating cooked, warm temperature foods and drinks; behavior changes, such as using hot foot bath 15 min plus heating pad to warm uterus area 15 minutes every night.
