Tampons REALLY hurt

Hi! So I’m 16 years old and I recently tried to insert a tampon for the first time. Since then, I’ve watched so many videos and read so much & I can’t figure out what I was doing wrong. My period was decently heavy. I was using a regular sized tampon because that’s all I had, but I have a really heavy flow so I thought it’d be okay. I was using a plastic applicator and I tried to position it at an angle but it just really hurt to get in. I tried every angle and all of them really hurt, but I figured it was normal and pushed through. I’ve been told that I have a high pain tolerance so I feel like it must’ve been really bad since it bothered me a lot. I eventually took the applicator out too early by accident, since the tampon wasn’t far in enough. I tried to push it in farther with my finger but it was so difficult. I kept crying because it really burned and it felt like my insides were tearing. & it was just really hard to push through, it wasn’t really going. I eventually gave up and pulled it out, which obviously hurt like a bastard but I really just wanted it out of me. It hurt for the rest of the day and the next day it still felt a little sore at certain positions. Please help :((
