Anonymous harassing texts. Help!

I have been receiving harassing texts messages from a number I do not know. I have called said number and it rings but nobody picks up, so it makes me thinks it’s actually from a real phone (vs google numbers).

My question is, does anyone know how to track down the owner of this number?

Some of the texts contain death wishes and pretty weird stuff. Some friends had suggested to turn this to the police, but this phone number is from another different state, and even if this option is viable, I’m not sure if the personal information of the person who is doing this, would be released to me from the police.
