What is Let Down?

Question

Does the baby draw out milk ONLY during letdown or does letdown mean that the flow is faster and the baby can draw milk out of the breasts without it?

"The let-down reflex makes the milk in your breasts available to your baby. Cells around the alveoli contract and squeeze out the milk, pushing it down the ducts towards the nipple. Oxytocin also makes the milk ducts widen, making it easier for the milk to flow down them."

There is always milk in your breast and some will come out before and after letdown, just not as much.

To me, let down always just meant that the flow had started.

Milk will slowly come out before a letdown. Once letdown occurs, your milk will flow quickly and squirts into your baby’s milk like a bottle would. A letdown lasts 10 mins or so but you can have more than one letdown during a feeding. I would usually feed through a letdown, burp my baby, then feed through another letdown with the baby on my opposite breast.
