Is a toddler bed necessary?

The crib I’m looking to get can convert into a toddler bed, but you need to buy the toddler bed rail separately. It’s an extra $100 so I’m just wondering if it’s necessary. Is a toddler bed necessary and is buying the matching rail necessary? I’m worried it won’t be available for purchase when/if we need it.

We didn’t use one. We went straight to a twin.

We use the toddler bed without the rail. Kid has fallen out of bed a few times. It's real low and he doesnt wake up normally. We plan on doing a regular when around 4 if he stops rolling off his bed.

I bought a toddler bed because the rail for the crib was too much. The height is perfect and I feel comfortable knowing she’s in a bed made for little people her size lol. I want to get a twin at some point, but right now my 3.5 yr old is doing great in her bed.

We have a convertible crib but we don't plan on buying the rail. If worse comes to worst we can make our own rail lol. But the mattress can drop very low to the ground. We probably won't.

Ours came with the rail but we switched to a twin at 2.5 years. We needed the crib for his brother.  Not sure if we'll use it this time around or not.

We transitioned my girl to the toddler bed a few days after she turned 3. In hindsight I should have waited longer because it caused a month or so of night waking. But regarding the bed, I think the toddler rail is helpful. She fell out of bed once before we put the rail on. Not a big deal since it's low, but since having it on there she has not fallen out. I think it's helpful for sure.

I ordered a rail that attaches to the frame of our convertible crib bed off of amazon. Only cost 20-25 dollars and works great!

It’s not necessary but it was very convenient for me. I agree, the pricing for a bed reil is crazy, our 4in1 crib cost $120 on sale and the reil cost $70. Doesn’t make sense but she loved her crib so transition to a toddler bed was super easy. Don’t worry about not having a right part later, there are many stores which have it. I bought mine on amazon not thru Target where I originally bought it.
