Can ultrasound be wrong about no heartbeat?

I found out in April we were expecting twins, one was measuring a day behind but both had heartbeats at 6 weeks.
Well, at my 8 week appt one baby was measuring 8w5d. The other was 7w5d. The smaller one didn't show a heartbeat. Is there any possibility it was wrong? She didn't really spend much time showing me the 2nd baby so I couldn't see for myself that it wasnt there. She only showed me that it was smaller and the body was still there. She spent the majority of the scan measuring and taking pictures of the bigger baby.
Im not doubting her but she had to have nurses show her how to use the machine to measure the babies and zoom in. So that isn't very reassuring. A different Dr did the 6 week appt. She's a newer Dr at this office. 
But my mom says she went in at 8 weeks found a heartbeat then at 10 weeks for bleeding and was told my brother had no heartbeat then but at her next scan the week after that to be sure, he had a heartbeat. She's trying to keep optimistic but I'm not. I just want to hear other stories for myself. 
I don't go for another scan until 13 weeks.

I'm so sorry, but no. Once you have a heartbeat and a geststional date from 1 scan, the next scan would show a heartbeat. It also wouldn't show 1 twin further along in growth, and the other stopped growing. I had a missed miscarriage my 3rd pregnancy. It was by complete surprise, I just had a scan at right before 7 weeks and there was a heartbeat, at 9 weeks it was gone and baby had stopped growing at 7.5 weeks. It was devastating. My husband was in denial and insisted it could be wrong, so I went back a few days later for another scan with him to see....same result. You can certainly ask for another scan, and if it was your first scan you can certainly be not as far along as you thought, but with a 2nd scan, it's accurate. I'm so sorry.

Sorry. But if there was a hearthbeat, then it should still be there. It is kind of a more common thing even. A dissapearing twin. Let your doctor explain.

I’m a little suspect about her not spending much time on the second baby. When I had a scan at 11 weeks and they couldn’t find a heartbeat, the sonographer spent several minutes and tried both abdominal and vaginal ultrasounds to confirm there wasn’t a heartbeat. She even changed the view so that any movements would show up in color. It was VERY thorough. A doctor later reviewed her report and ultrasound footage to confirm.
The other part that was telling was that the baby was measuring three weeks behind. And she STILL tried so hard to locate the heartbeat!
Can you call and request to be seen again to check for the heartbeat? The fact that the second baby is measuring small is concerning, but I’ve heard that can happen with twins.
