Attempted VBA2C, thankful for RCS

Carla

I wanted to go into labor on my own to increase my chances of a successful VBA2C. However, we live an hour away from the hospital which made me nervous about possible rupture and with the ever changing COVID-19 situation, we thought it best to schedule an induction 5/1 at 39w6d.

I went in 1/2cm dialated externally but internally closed as baby's head was not engaged. Unfortunately, that removed the Foley cath as an option so pitocin was started about 10:30pm at a 2. Most of the night I felt nothing.

But by 7am pitocin was at an 8 and I was really feeling contractions but only if I stayed sitting up in bed (which made it incredibly difficult to keep baby on the monitor). I felt nothing and no contractions registered if I laid down on my sides, so weird.

I was able to have apple juice for breakfast and at noon a raspberry smoothie (basically raspberries and ice) and it tasted like heaven!

Staying upright it was getting harder to breathe through the contractions so I asked to be checked around 3pm. NO CHANGES! At this point I was tired, hungry, and convinced my body just wasn't ready for birth. After talking with my husband, I reluctantly decide to ask for a csection. I feel so defeated.

I'm taken back at 6:45 and once the epidural is in place I'm laid down and the table is tilted slightly left. After a few minutes the nurses are on alert as baby is having decels into 90's and 80's. One nurse runs out to notify my doctor. Once the doctor is in place baby boy makes his appearance in a matter of minutes. He's born a little lethargic and with a bluish hue. We overheard a nurses comment saying "He was all wrapped up in that cord."

As soon as he gets to the warmer he passes meconium. It doesn't dawn on me until the next day that this happened because he was in distress. After a few minutes in the warmer and getting cleaned up he screams and pinks up. Luke Scott is 8lbs 10oz and 21 inches long, born on his due date May 2nd.

I don't regret my decision for a C-section. No one ever told us how he was wrapped in the cord and later my OB acted like it was no biggie. But I'm convinced our outcome could have been very different had I gotten the vaginal delivery I wanted so badly.
