Starting birth control

Hello everyone. I'm 34 and I have started the birth control pill ( the one with the least hormones) . I haven't had birth control since 2014. That was an iud. Before that I haven't had the pill since 2005. I started the pill on the 5th day of my period as my doctor told me to, but my period had never reached full bleeding. I then spotted for 10 or so days abs then started heavy bleeding/ cramping. It has now been 20 days since my period stated, my 15th day on the pill and my 5th day of heavy bleeding and cramping. Heavier and more pain than I've had in years. Is this normal?
