Weaning a toddler has been ROUGH

Em

Does anyone have experience weaning a toddler? My daughter is almost 22 months old and I’ve been trying to wean her since January (at 17 months old). She still refuses to accept the fact that I won’t nurse her during the night. We’re working on getting her to spend the whole night in her own bed but we bed share for half the night so it doesn’t help that she’s right beside me.

She just puts up SUCH a fight at night and while I enforce no nursing between 11pm to 5am as best as I can, it’s absolutely draining for both of us. Last night was awful....I’ll give you a snapshot...

I went up to bed at 11:30 and she woke up at 11:40. I was up with her for FOUR HOURS. She cried soooooo hard for a while, changed positions a million times, and then I decided bed sharing wasn’t working so I tried to get her back in her bed. That didn’t work so a half hour later we were back in my bed. All she wants to do is nurse or touch my nipples for comfort. I can’t deal with it anymore. I finally let her nurse at 2am and even THAT didn’t work. Then my husband went down and got her a cup of milk at 3am because she didn’t really eat much dinner and we thought she might have been hungry. She was happy and drank a lot of it but then when I tried to put her to bed again, it took ANOTHER 45 minutes!! AND she demanded that we nurse again.

Has anyone dealt with this before? I wonder if I’m going to have to stop breastfeeding cold turkey or something. I’m at my wits end and really don’t know what to do anymore. I also feel bad that this has been so stressful for my daughter, especially since it’s been going on for 5 months. It’s not awful every night...sometimes nights are fairly easy...but it’s definitely frequent. I hope this hasn’t been detrimental to her in any way.

Help please! 🆘
