Are MLMs (multi-level marketing) essentially cults

So, I’m pretty deep into the anti-mlm community. And I’ve seen the argument presented several times that MLMs function like cults with a cult like mentality...

-anyone that disagrees are haters or negative

-to cut off family/friends that doesn’t agree with you going after your dreams

-the whole dream complex (also listen to “the dream” podcast the investigative journalism is amazing)

-to idolize the company and the ceos at the top. And the #bossbabes making it.

Another point, that I think is really important is NXIVM, which is an alleged sex cult, that was modelled after the multi-level marketing structure. And technically was an MLM selling “spiritual counselling”.

But cult is sometimes used as a buzzword, so is calling MLMs cults accurate?
