Pooping while sleeping

So for the past couple of days, my little guy has decided to poop while sound asleep and in the middle of the night. I almost always hear it and then struggle with whether or not to wake him for fear that it was just some toots and then he won't go back to sleep, which has definitely happened. I'm just curious what you all do when this happens. I know I 'should' wake him up and I have been, but is there another alternative? He also gets loaded down with diaper cream right before bed and almost always sleeps through the night! Thoughts??
