How can pregnancy be a surprise?

In 32 years old and fairly intelligent - I don't understand how pregnancy can be a surprise! Maybe I'm naive but I just don't see how, aside from medical conditions, women can be shocked they are pregnant! Please share your stories!!! I have been using my trusty pull out method for years, and surprise - no baby!!! Does bc actually fail? I love the surprise stories, they make me happy, I just don't see how it could be a total out of the blue shock

I got pregnant on birth control (Apri). Never missed a pill, took it by alarm every day, but still got pregnant. When you know you're being very diligent with your pregnancy prevention, you don't even consider it a possibility so it's a huge surprise when it happens!

My husband and I started dating at 16yrs old and used condoms for maybe for the first 6months to a year, if that. Then for another 6 years we used nothing but the pull out method. SIX YEARS!!! No pregnancy. Now we are married and have a planned pregnancy. I honestly don't understand how people can be all that surprised. My friend is currently on her third back to back pregnancy and all were "oops" babies. And I mean "oops" as in: "he busted in me but I didn't actuallyyyy think I'd get pregnant!! What am I going to do?! I can't have another one!!!! I don't want one!!" 
It pisses me off. I know several people like that. If you don't want another baby or aren't ready for one, be a big boy and a big girl and use a preventative strategy. I hate when people abuse fertility and then complain about it.

My best friend got pregnant twice with the pull out method. Her first she didn't know she was pregnant until she was in labor and the second she knew she was pregnant but she thought she was only 8 weeks when she was actually 6 months along. She's a skinny girl too so it's kind of crazy!

I got pregnant on the pill, after being on the shot for about 4 years. I switched off the shot in June of 2011 on to the pill July 2011 and pregnant August 2011. It's not that I was surprised because I know birth control is not fool proof. But I guess I was more shocked. Even more so now that I was able to get pregnant then after being on the HORRIBLE shot for so long and having been off birth control for all of this year trying to conceive our second to no avail.

I was trying to get pregnant, used medication, taking prenatals, the whole bit. Got my cycle relatively on time (I have pcos so they aren't regular to begin with). My cycle ended up lasting 19 days, saw my OBGYN near the end of it and I tested negative for pregnancy and wasn't having any symptoms. Saw a reproductive endocrinologist about 2 weeks later for infertility because of my long history of trouble conceiving and a miscarriage and during a routine ultrasound he found an ectopic pregnancy sac. He believed i was 8 weeks along but it was a miscarriage. I had no idea I was pregnant because I never got a positive pregnancy test before or during that weird long cycle.
