What does this even mean???

So recently my boyfriend and I of two years have broken up not too long ago but he wants to stay friends. We text everyday but it’s just in different tones he said he needs time to “chill” by himself and with his friends. We still mess around here and there. He tells me that he isn’t messing with anyone or talking to anybody and he sometimes brings up getting back together. I need help ASAP idk if he’s just leading me on or if he really wants to get back with me in the future.
