Shouldn’t certain work careers REQUIRE additional trainings/ education?

Question

I was watching a show where an OB female doctor said she can deliver babies, but once the babies are here she knows nothing. She birthed her own child and said she felt like an intern and I found that so interesting since her direct work is prenatal/ delivery care. It also reminded me since I’m in nutrition education that many doulas my clients want do NOT have any education in breastfeeding. 
Do you feel certain fields even outside of these should require education beyond the expertise they are originally obtaining?

No, one is already expected to know so much in their specific field - unless they were a MacBook how on earth can we expect them to know beyond their specialty? That’s why we have pediatricians for example.

Being an OBGYN is much more extensive than just delivering babies & seeing pregnant patients. The uterus, Fallopian tubes, ovaries, vagina, vulva, clitoris, labia, etc. are all very complicated organs and areas and that is going to be the focus of their speciality. Pregnancy is just a branch of that. 
Dealing with newborns requires a pediatrician, someone trained in completely different things and the health and wellbeing of babies and children. 
I don’t see how/why the two would need to be crossed, personally. I’d much rather have someone who has focused on one major thing than someone who has a bunch of different focuses. Seems like a tighter focus would yield more expertise.

No, I don’t think so. That’s why they’re referred to as specialists. As soon as the baby is born, anything regarding the baby should be taken care of by a pediatrician. 
The pediatrician certainly isn’t going to assist me with my postpartum issues after delivery. I don’t think an OBGYN should be expected to know anything a specialist would know about babies after delivery.

CEU’s are required by most professions. It’s just not realistic for someone to train in every area, and they’re typically at the workers expense. I can’t blame someone for not seeking out additional ones that are only related to their work in a secondary or tertiary capacity.

I remember way back to when I had my first baby I asked my OB if she would be the one seeing her for her first appointment.  She said no and kinda laughed and said she knew nothing about new born babies and only did prenatal.  I remember being a little taken back because I just assumed she would also do the newborn appointments.  Lol I don’t know why it just didn’t occur to me that it wasn’t a part of their practice.  It would be nice if they did but that would probably be a lot for them as they’re already pretty busy.  Our babies just see our family doctors here, we don’t get paediatricians unless the child has something that more that needs different care.

Yes, I feel like doctors really don't learn enough in school. If they want to learn something they have to take the initiative themselves to get that additional education.

I think continuing education is always necessary in ones actual field, not in others. Things change and new methods arise so you’ve got to stay current. That being said, continuing education shouldn’t be required in things outside of your job duties. I’m a certified teacher and my hubby a firefighter and paramedic so we’re both required to do so many hours to renew licenses. He chooses to seek out knowledge that isn’t within the realm of his job (such as suturing) but it’s by choice only.
