Pros cons of pacifiers?

Question

Now that my 3 week old has been a good breast feeder for the past few weeks I started giving him a paci as long as he’s recently fed. I’ve read that it’s good to wean them from pacifier dependency at 6 months so they don’t depend on them for too long. But what are the general pros/cons of babies using pacifiers to sooth? Good idea, bad idea/ why or why not?

I was strict on just at bed and nap time. Ever so often for emergencies  if we where out or got hurt. 
My son had it till maybe 20 months. And it was wicked easy to break it from him. 
Definitely helped him sleep longer when he was little.

6 months seems early. I’m not sure why anybody would wean them that early but to each their own obviously. Pacifiers reduce the risk of sids and that’s a big reason why we decided on using one. Also because our daughter was starting to self soothe with her fingers and it’s MUCH easier to wean them off a paci than it is a finger.

All three of my kids HATED them . It didn’t matter which kind we used or anything , they just refused to use them .

I know its probably not the norm, but we used it a lot so that my son would keep his hands and other stuff out of his mouth especially when away from home.  We used it a lot for that until he was about 10 months and then it was used less and less until just naps, bedtime and when we were away from home.  At about 12 months we went down to just naps and bedtime.  It took about 2-3 days of asking for it at nap time, but then he forgot about it.

I gave my kids the pacifier since birth. Helps them soothe themselves. My son was off it before 2, didn’t give me any issues to come off it. My 7 month old uses it for naps mostly

My bf was always against it. He has 2 other kids from his first marriage and never used it with them. With our 2 boys he didn't want them to have one. I was never for it or against it so we never gave them a pacifier. I'm so glad we didn't. I hear how hard it is to ween them off and the teeth issues it can cause.

I like that they help prevent SIDS. My son had his until a little over a year and kind of stopped on his own. His teeth are perfect according to the dentist.

My daughter loved her paci & thankfully she did. She had horrible acid reflux & seen many doctors for it, when she started taking the paci regular it helped her reflux. She had the paci until 1 though since it was hard to wing. It took me less than a week to wing her & after that she’s been perfect without it. It’s not easy taking it from them but it’s a great way to help reflux & helps sooth them when they are upset!

My little one has had one from his first few days in the hospital. He gets it for naps and bedtime if he wants it, but even at a few days old he would spit it out if he didn’t want it. He usually only has it for a few minutes while he falls asleep and then will spit it out. I think if he was more attached to it then I would worry. I like having it sometimes because it buys us a few extra minutes if we’re out and about and he’s getting sleepy. We’re never far from home and I don’t use it in place of a feeding ever, it’s literally just to “pacify” for a few minutes while we head home.
