I know it sounds funny lol, but there is an old saying that’s means a person only responds when they feel it applies. So do you believe people “wear the shoe if it fits?” Are most people you encounter quick to respond to things that may not even apply due to offense on a topic?

I get what you’re saying. 
An example I can use is that my boyfriend’s mother thought a post I made on Facebook was about her. The post was explaining my experience as a new mother. This witch makes it about her. 
So I think if a person is quickly offended by something said that isn’t directed at them then hey if the shoe fits 🤷‍♀️

Emotional reactivity and negativity bias are hard wired in our brains for survival.  
Imagine if we were sitting in the middle of the road and a bus was coming at us.  If we decided to take out a pen, paper and calculator and work out how long it might take for the bus to hit us depending on the speed at which we stood up and walked or ran off the road to get out of danger, we’d be dead lol.  So our habitual and instinctual reactions (in this case to run the F away) serve a purpose.
But, they can also be not so helpful and downright destructive.  Meditative training helps to nurture non-reactivity or responding instead of reacting.  I do believe most of our knee jerk reactions show up to protect ourselves from pain. 
“Imagine you are walking through the woods and you see a small dog. You think the dog is cute and you approach the dog, wanting to pet it. It suddenly snarls and tries to bite you. The dog no longer seems cute and you may feel some fear and anger. 
As the wind blows, the leaves on the ground are carried away and you see the dog has one of its legs caught in a trap. 
Now, you feel compassion for the dog. You know it became aggressive because it is in pain and suffering. You go from being angry, to this poor thing.
I pause and get that in some way my leg is in the trap. The thing I’m judging is coming from a place of pain. Then I soften and I can be present with feelings  and offer kindness to myself.”

Yes. Using recent current events, you can see this happening. “White people perpetuate systematic racism” is a true statement. A racist white person will yell “oh my gosh! Not all white people are racist! You’re being racist towards white people!” Only an offended, overt racist would say that. People who understand systemic racism would agree and talk about ways to combat it.
