Carolina Rose? (Care-oh-LEEN-ah - reasons in post)

Question

My husband’s mother is from Carolina, PR and we want to honor his family with the first name. Rose is my sister and great grandmother’s name. 
I’m worried about it being constantly aligned with or pronounced like the state. But I love the nickname possibilities of Cara or Lina (LEE-na.)
Thoughts?

I’d change the i to an e to avoid the Carolina confusion.

I would keep the spelling as it is. Changing it to Carolena changes the pronunciation in Spanish and that sort of defeats the purpose.

What about Caralena or Caralina for a spelling instead? I think if you are around a predominantly PR group, you may not have issues, but elsewhere yeah, you might get the state. What you're going for is a beautiful pronunciation though!

I should note that we live in an area with a VERY large Puerto Rican population and we have a VERY recognizable Puerto Rican last name, so I think many (at least where we live) will be able to pronounce it. :)

I pronounced it the way you were hoping in my head when I first read it! But I’m a musician and read a lot of things in other languages, so that might be why 😅 I think it’s a beautiful name,  I’d keep the spelling the same and people will learn it in no time.

As I teacher I had a girl whose name was pronounced that way but she never corrected me and I called her the state all year long (middle school). I think your daughter might not correct people after awhile like the girl in my class
