Are programs like Beyond Scared Straight useful or harmful?

Beyond Scared Scared was a tv show on A&E that ended in 2015, it highlighted troubled teens going to crime prevention programs that were apparently supposed to deter them from wanting to continue their harmful lifestyle. Many of the teens were involved in prostitution, underaged drinking, drug use, theft, gang activity, bad behavior at school etc. However if you’ve ever watched the show, the officers were extremely hard on the teens and would often use very aggressive and demeaning language, they would force them to eat food they didn’t like whilst yelling in their faces, also demanded they do a lot of vigorous exercise. The teens were also berated by the inmates and had inappropriate conversations with them, some inmates insinuated they would want to have sex with some of the teens featured which is very off-putting and disturbing to me.

Most of these kids come from troubled homes where they’ve dealt with abuse, drug use and/or alcoholism as well as (TW) sexual abuse. In a way I understand what these programs are trying to do, which is show the reality of actually being in prison, but my other thought is why not try to get these kids in counseling? The main reason why these kids are acting out is because they have a lot of emotional trauma that hasn’t been addressed and their home life isn’t healthy. I just feel like there are better ways than sending them to programs like this. What do you think?
