No dilation but soft?

Question

First pregnancy so I’m very new to everything lol. I’m 38 weeks and my doctor checked me today and said I’m not dilated but my cervix is extremely soft. I’m being induced next Wednesday so I’m not worried about anything, just wondering what that means!

Is there a reason why you’re being induced? 
The cervix starts to thin before you dilate so it sounds like you would go into labor without it.
Don’t know if this is helpful but I’ve always been told not to induce since it can lead to stronger contractions and low heart rate for the baby. Usually induction leads to epidural due to the pain and a low heart rate leads to c section if it gets too low. 
They call it the cascade of interventions, but if you’re cool with that, I say go for it and best of luck mama!

It literally means just that. You haven’t dilated yet, but your cervix is starting to get ready so it’s softer than normal so it can start dilating soon.
