Is this statement really true? Is ignorance really bliss?

I don’t think this has been posted before but plz tell me if it’s a repeat
Anyways a random thought popped into my head tonight and I was like could this really be true? We all have heard the expression of “”ignorance is bliss” but I don’t think it’s permanent. Sure it may be nice to ignore the news for a while but forever? Does that bring true happiness? Any ideas?

No, I believe ignorance is one of the roots of suffering.
But, turning the news off for your mental health is not ignorance.  It’s wise to give your nervous system a break, take care of yourself and not burn out.

Yes. Definitely, yes. I was/am pretty naive to all of the terrible things going on in the world. I recently asked my partner to explain some things to me (he’s a political science major and also 12 years older than me and knows a lot) and I am changed. I mourned my loss of ignorance because now I feel like I can’t go back to living my life as I did before. 
We talked about the Israel/Palestine conflict, the US federal reserve, how our national debt works, about the World Bank and how corrupt they are... Idk, I only know the tip of the iceberg now and already I’m just so sickened by all of the injustice. It’s become so clear to me that our government doesn’t care one iota about us- they only care that we are productive citizens so they can continue to gain extraordinary wealth while we scrape by. And I so badly don’t want to be a part of this anymore. 
So while I will be making numerous positive changes in our lives, changes that will help us to live more according to our values- I do kind of miss just not knowing.

i always feel like the phrase “ignorance is bliss” paints ignorance to be some kind of goal. like you’ll be happier with the less that you know. 
also, i can’t really think of an example of where i would prefer to be ignorant?

“Ignorance is bliss” comes from a poem by Thomas Gray called “Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College”, in which he reflects on the nostalgia of his youth and being ignorant to the things he now knows as an adult that cause him misery. 
The poem expresses the burden people tend to feel as we gain responsibility, and how we romanticize our childhood as carefree in contrast to being an adult with so much that needs our attention. The idiom reflects the idea that what would cause us stress and worry is better not knowing about. 
I think most idioms are to be taken with a grain of salt (idiom for an idiom 😆). I have my own wisdom of being aware of the general and ignorant of the details. Total ignorance is not bliss, after all it is human nature to want to learn so it would naturally cause stress and anxiety to live in a world you don’t understand. See the big picture then focus in on what you can do something about, where you actually have influence and what matters to your individual life. Manage your worry so what you do worry about is what you can do something about. There is no gain in worrying over what is beyond that. Knowing more, being less ignorant, about such things is just adding stress you can’t do anything about.

I think in certain circumstances it is... my Grandmother-in-law has dimentia and close to the end we stopped correcting her on who was who cause there was no point. If she wanted to believe that her son was her brother and her grandson was her son, and she was transported to a time when she was healthy and happy and had her family with her, who cares if she didnt know what year it was... she was the happiest she had ever been...

I'd say it depends. Is it ignorant because you ignore it purposefully, or ignorant because you genuinely have no idea that something has happened? Because I've heard it used both ways. 
On purpose, its temporary. Chances are it'll eat away at you eventually and you'll have to come to terms with it.
No idea whats going on? Probably forever so long as its never brought to light. Some people probably have secrets that they take to their grave to prevent a loved one's suffering.

It depends. Is the ignorance bringing false happiness? Is the ignorance harming another? Is the ignorance impacting your life or the lives of others? Usually it's not as blissful as one may think. I would rather know and understand than stay ignorant.

Depends. If someone thinks my hair looks stupid then yes. I dont need to know what others think of me, if my partner is abusive to my children then no.

I think it means turning your attention to things aren’t going to make you feel bad. 
Kinda like out of sight out of mind. If you choose to not give attention to certain things, they have less power over you.. less power to bother you. So being ignorant to it or less invested is more blissful.
