Hi Mamas,

I’m having a really rough day/week. My son will be 20 months old on the 10th. I am trying to teach him to talk and he just isn’t receptive. Every time I say words, he just makes silly faces or does something random like grab my hair clip, or starts laughing, or walks away and grabs a toy. (he has a very playful and outgoing personality). He likes books and does have the patience to sit with me while I read. But even word books, he literally won’t repeat words I’m saying. He just sits there and listens and stares at the page.

He doesn’t have hearing issues, pediatrician says no signs of autism, and no delays anywhere else so far.

I’m at my wits end. I’m just upset because I work full time and he’s in daycare and I feel like it’s my fault because I’m not a stay at home mom who devoted my time to him all day. My husband and I are both very well-educated and pretty smart to be honest (he’s an engineer and I am a marketing executive) so I would assume our child would be similar in intelligence and pick up on things better. But I guess not. I honestly feel like a shitty mom and like I’m selfish and like I need to quit my job to help my son catch up because I’m getting no honest help or input.

Pediatrician isn’t helpful and says he’s not concerned and was acting very laid back about the fact that our son can only say like 5 words, but I see all these parents saying their kids can say 50+ words, phrases, etc. so something is obviously wrong.

pedi also said wait until 2 years old for a speech evaluation. But we will be missing all these months. Isn’t that too late?

I don’t know what else to do and I feel incredibly guilty like this is my fault.

Moms, did you find that being a stay at home mom helped your child be more advanced? Or does it not matter?

Curious about input from both working moms and stay at home moms where your child is as far as speaking...
