Progesterone shots gone wrong
I was given three progesterone shots in sesame oil with 22 gauge 1 1/2 inch needle, 2 ml. The first shot was done properly by a nurse at the clinic.
The second two were done by a nurse friend of mine who had given the shots to another friend. She was willing to help and I trusted she knew what she was doing. Unfortunately, she didn't. She did everything right except she did not insert the needle all the way. My husband said he could see about half of it. I am 5'9, 150 lbs. I do not believe they made it to muscle. One shot was given too high and didn't react as bad but after the second one I woke up numb in the back of my thigh a ways below the injection site. I was told to massage the lumps at the injection sites and they swelled to huge lumps, red itchy and painful. They eventually bruised and 5 weeks later are still fading. I had a terrible systemic response including swelling, itchy red lumps on my legs and still have itchy spots popping up randomly on arms, face buttock and legs. I had trouble breathing and in particular swelling on my left arm that turned cold and blue one night and I couldn't close my hand. I felt like I had the flu for a month with no fever, achy everywhere. It was severe. My labs were off as well--CNBC, sed rate 20, etc. The labs have improved after being repeated but I have since tested positive for Sjogrens, which I'm wondering if it could be caused by this reaction. I have been told it doesn't matter if the needle didn't make the muscle and I just had a bad reaction (not sure what--oil or suppose could be benzyl alcohol as that was in it too) and it will get better and all resolve with time. They say they see this more in heavier women where it doesn't reach muscle. The numb spot on my leg is inflamed/puffy. The last of the two shots she gave me was on 10/6.
I did not go through IVF but was supplementing due to a history of losses and low progesterone. We have four healthy children and I never supplemented progesterone during those pregnancies. I am on suppositories now.
Is there anyone who has been through anything like this that can offer any advice/hope for me? I would love to call up my local IVF treatment center and ask them but as I'm not a patient I don't think they would help. My OB is not much help either. Many thanks!
