Is this caterpillar dead?

So I went to Lowe's yesterday and picked up some clearance plants and while I was trimming this one, I noticed a caterpillar. My boyfriend touched it and it didn't move. I told him I think it's ready to become a cocoon. But I've never garden before nor know about wildlife. Does anyone else have insight to this?

Looks like a tobacco budworm. It’ll ruin your flowers. It’s color comes from eating the flower buds. It looks living but don’t be sad if it does die. They can be super invasive.

That isn’t a usual or good spot for a caterpillar to stop. They usually find a place a little more protected and will hang head down in a j shape. A moth with make a cocoon (so they’ll be active but stationary) and a caterpillar will molt its skin and a chrysalis will be underneath (they won’t be active). It is hard to tell about the caterpillar you have pictured.

Well. If they are touched for a bit, they should curl up when alive. But that doesn't look like a catepillar, it might be something you don't want to live on your plats. But I am not familiar with your areas bugs and pests, so can't say, what it is.
