37 Weeks with period like constant cramps and BH. Sign of early labor?

Question

I'm 37 weeks pregnant. I've been having bad period-like cramps, and contractions. The contractions are mildly painful, but not consistent so I think they are still BH. This is my second pregnancy, and I didn't have this during my first. 
Doctor told me not to bother calling or going to the hospital until contractions are consistent, though. From what I've read it could be the beginning of labor, or it might go away and labor is still weeks away 🤷‍♀️ I'm wondering what others experiences have been.

I has the same with my first. Thought it was  BH. And irregular but had it all night. Was going for scan with obgyn in the morning anyway. By then they were rather strong and when I got there she checked me and I was in labor. So it was off to maternity for me and hubby rushed home to get our bags etc.  Crazy day lol

Update: This was happening Saturday and by that night the cramping subsided. Sunday and Monday were calmer, lots of BH but not the cramping like on Saturday. Today (Tuesday) it is back to pretty heavy consistent cramping and irregular contractions. I have an OB appointment to.orrow so hopefully they can give me some insight!
