Is not wearing makeup unprofessional?

Personally I believe whether or not you want to wear makeup is completely your choice. No one should be able to tell you to put on makeup or not. Unless your job actually requires it, like you have to dress up in costume or something, I don’t see why makeup is seen as mandatory to look professional. I had a job interview today and was advised by my mother to not forget to put on makeup. I feel fine leaving the house without makeup, and if I do my makeup it’s usually light. Sometimes I’ll be inspired to do a fuller face if I’m going out or something, but I don’t see why makeup is seen as something a woman HAS to do in order to look professional. Do you think not wearing makeup is unprofessional, why or why not?
