Would you say something to your neighbour?

Debate between my husband and I.

We live in a duplex on the beach. Our backyard is 100 feet of private beach property. It’s shared between 2 tenants, my husband and I upstairs and a single guy in his late 30’s downstairs.

The guy downstairs is super nice and 90% of the time, he’s a great neighbour. He has shared custody of his 2 sons and they are around every Monday, Wednesday, and every other weekend.

Now that it’s summer, they’re on the beach every time they’re here.

The issue I have is that the guy is a slob! Every time his kids are here, they leave trash all over the beach and it’s left there for days!

Last week I was finally fed up and picked up their trash. One day they left an entire 6 pack of beer cans, 3 water bottles, used Tupperware, a broken kite and left all of the lawn chairs out by the water. (We bought lawn chairs and told him they can use them as long as he puts them back after)

Today I went out again and there was another 6 beer cans, more water bottles and a broken umbrella.

Because it’s a shared space, I feel like he’s being incredibly disrespectful by leaving trash out for days. Not to mention teaching his sons that it’s okay to just leave your trash everywhere.

I want to say something to him and ask him to clean up after himself and his kids, but my husband thinks it’s none of our business and we shouldn’t say anything and that it’s not a big deal.

Would you say something to your neighbour if you were in this situation?
