Question

What are the guidelines on when you should return to work when you have symptoms but get a negative test? What about positive? Waiting to hear back from my doctor but my boss says if it’s negative I should be able to come back immediately...I still am not feeling good however. I work in the OR at a hospital but not directly with patients.

The recommendation is stay home for the duration of your symptoms plus 72 hours or 14 days, whatever is longer.  I can’t stres this next part enough: A NEGATIVE TEST DOES NOT CONFIRM YOU ARE NEGATIVE. The nasopharyngeal swab can have up to a 30% false negative rate. Assume positivity if you have symptoms and stay home. ( nurse practitioner in an ER, this is our advice)

Covid isn’t the only virus out there.. just because that was negative doesn’t mean you aren’t sick or contagious with something else. I’d stay home and get well before returning to work!

My husband is an essential worker, when we thought we got it last month, he went back to work 2 days after his negative. The only reason he didn’t go back the next day is bc the cancelled his shifts for the next 2 weeks just in case.

Rules are different for medical workers though. You need to get advice directly from your hospital.

In my hospital, if you test negative, you go back to work. If you test positive, then it is more of a process to follow through with employee health.

If you have the PTO, I'd call in and get retested a couple days later. It's happened before where the viral load just wasn't high enough for someone to get a positive yet because it was still building. But we also had a nurse test positive and management tell her to just wear a mask. So depends place to place.
