Question

Give me the pros and cons, especially with breastfeeding!

Random link because I can’t reply without linking something. 🙄 This is my pro/con list. (Source: I’m a pharmacist.)
Pro’s:
- No estrogen, so lower rate of blood clots than combination pills and a safer option for higher risk women (smokers over 35, people with history of clots, migraine with aura sufferers)
- More forgiving than the traditional mini-pill if you forget a dose. You’re less likely to have breakthrough bleeding, and your pregnancy prevention window lasts for up to 24 hours after your missed dose compared to 3 hours with the traditional mini-pill.
- Your milk supply shouldn’t be affected because there’s no estrogen. Also, safe to continue breastfeeding while taking it.
- Has 4 days of placebo pills at the end of the pack to help you have more regular and predictable periods while on it. Also gives your body a little break from the hormones. The traditional mini-pill has no placebo pills, and some women have irregular (or no) periods while on it.
Con’s:
- Price tag. $200 bucks without insurance or if it’s not covered. Most insurances cover the traditional mini-pill and other progestin only birth control (IUDs, implant) for low or no cost. Without insurance, you can find the traditional mini-pill for less than $10 at some pharmacies.
- Still very unforgiving than other birth control options. Though the window is longer than the traditional mini-pill, it’s still a pretty short time frame compared to combination birth control pills (you can miss 2-3 days with some pills and still correct it) or IUDs/implant that continue to work all the time. 
- The hormone that’s in Slynd is the same hormone that’s in Yaz, which has been tied to lawsuits. It’s not known yet if Slynd will have the same problems that Yaz did because it’s too new. 
- Because of how it works, Slynd can affect potassium levels in your body. You may be asked to have regular bloodwork done to make sure your potassium stays at a healthy level. If you talking other medicines that affect your potassium, you might not be able to take Slynd.
Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it at this current time. It’s really expensive and doesn’t carry much more benefits than the traditional mini-pill. If you’re concerned about what happens if you forget a pill, you’re better off choosing an IUD or the implant. Forgetting pills is more likely to happen when you’re taking care of an infant. That’s why after my first, I didn’t choose a pill option. I knew I’d be more forgetful due to sleep deprivation.
