For us, it more depends on the cry... If shes hysterical I'm not going to leave her alone. But she has a 'lazy cry' where I know she's just about to fall asleep. I leave her for that one of course. Then there's a few in-between cries that might eventually lead to one or the other. So on those nights we wait however long it takes until it turns into either the hysterical cry or the lazy cry. 
Most nights there's no crying at all tho. we spent months figuring out the best nap schedule for her and her nighttime routine so that she's ready by the time bedtime comes.
We recently started using my phone alarm so she sees and hears it go off. That's the start of her "quiet time"... So then we start a 15 minute timer together and she gets to pick how we spend that time. Usually cleaning, reading, or dancing(swaying back and forth to calm music videos). Then when that timer goes off she knows it's time to sleep. Thats been helpful too.

I go in right away and lay down next to her. I rub her back and kiss her forehead that. Usually puts her back to sleep right away.

Depends on the cry. Actual nightmare or crying for a need, I go in immediately. If they are just fussing to fuss or because they are mad, I'll give them 5 and go back in quietly to tuck them in.

I sprint immediately at the slightest sound, dont want a lil discomfort to turn into a whole crying episode! My older daughter sleeps in the same room and one disturbed baby is better than two ! Most of tge time she needs to be turned around or has her blankie pulled away or is just hot..
