Money dance: fun or tacky?

Im not planning on having a money dance because I think it's rude to ask for cash when your guests already bought you a gift and have spent money in travel expenses, etc. But my DJ said he just did a wedding where the bride and groom made like $1400 by turning it into a contest. Thoughts?

Not all guests gift store bought items. This dance is common for quite a few cultures and it seems comparable to card gift boxes.

I had never heard of these until I moved to the Midwest (I'm from the south). I think it's so tacky to ask your guests for cash. You shouldn't include on your invitations that you're registered at Macy's or only want cash for gift or something like that. I don't see the dollar dance as being any different.

​If your reason was "I want to dance with as many of my guests as possible," I would maybe find it a little less tacky. But if you're doing it for the money, I think it's really rude.
