Elective Induction ?

Is anyone thinking of asking their Dr for an induction? I'm currently 38 weeks FTM and thinking of asking her for inducing at 39 or at least 40, or at least to see what she says. I know some women think this is selfish, so wanted to get opinions (and hoping we can all be adults and kind towards everyone's thoughts, regardless what they may be)

Its not selfish AT ALL. This is my 3rd baby and my 3rd elective induction at 39 weeks which is the earliest you can get one that isn't medically necessary. I have had 3 smooth pregnancies but cannot handle the pain and discomfort by this point so have always asked to be induced at 39 weeks. There is always the possibility things may not go well during induction, just like natural labor, but I have had 2 smooth inductions and look forward to a 3rd going just fine on Monday when I'm 39+2 this go around!! I did an elective induction with my second baby and it went smoothly. I had some crazy things happen with my first birth that caused a tremendous amount of anxiety as I approached my due date with my second. I am now pregnant with my third and had a conversation with my doctor last week. She said the information that’s out there is looking at a wide range of induction cases...so looking at women with health issues that requires an (earlier than 39 week) induction to those who are late at 41 weeks.  They also lump first time giving birth criteria with those who have birthed before.  My doctor said it depends on your situation and where you may fall. Given my past super fast deliveries and my health and lack of complications throughout, I am in a low risk profile and she feels comfortable inducing at 39 weeks if I want.  You also have to show some progress which i am (fully effaced and 2cm dilated at 37 weeks).  I haven’t quite decided if I’ll move forward with the induction.  I certainly hope to go into labor sooner. I realize that topics like bring on a lot of opinions and nasty comments among other topics - giving birth with no pain meds vs. epidural and breastfeeding or not. Drives me crazy how nasty women are to each other on some of these topics. We need to be more supportive of each other.  Good luck to all the Mom’s excited for baby’s arrival!

I think it depends on the doctor if they’ll do it. I am 38 weeks pregnant and over it already, mainly because I have a severe PUPPP breakout and the only cure is delivery. I see my doctor tomorrow and I’m going to ask if an elective induction is even a possibility.

I just scheduled mine for Aug 13th. Due date is 11th. Wanted to wait a couple more days, but doc will be out of town that weekend. I just didn't want to go over 41 weeks. Little boy is already measuring almost 8 pounds.

I’m also 38 weeks. My appointment is tomorrow so I’m planning on asking my doctor what the plan is. I’m going to ask her to check my cervix and if I’m dilated then I’ll ask for a membrane sweep. 
This is my second so it would be ideal to have an idea of when I’ll go into labor so my MIL can come ahead of time to be with my toddler.

My doctor said I could sign up after 39 weeks. The only thing is that my hospital has a waitlist for elective induction. So like they call you when there’s an opening and you need to be in the hospital with in 2 hours. I was considering it but Mainly because of the convenience but since it’s still randomized and not actually for a specific date and time I think I’ll wait to do it until after 40-41 weeks.

I asked for one. This is my second baby, and the first labor was back labor and my contractions were irregular. It seems like if you’re not a first time mom, you can ask for an induction anytime after 39 weeks and they’re fine with it for any reason. You’re not selfish for wanting it, and you don’t have to explain your decision to anyone! If this is the birth you want, there is no harm in asking for it.

Mine wouldn’t until I was overdue. They did let me schedule an induction at my 39 week appointment (was actually 39+4 it was a Tuesday) for the following Monday (40+3) but my water broke about 8 hours after my appointment
