Gestational Diabetes?

I got the call from my doctor today that I failed my 3-hour glucose test and was officially diagnosed with GD. I was pretty shocked! With my first baby, I failed the 1 hour test by 1 point, but then passed the 3 hour. This time, I failed the 1 hour test by 1 point again, but now failed the 3 hour. As instructed by my doctor, I will have to maintain a low carb diet through the rest of the pregnancy. Tomorrow, I have to start poking my finger and testing my blood 4 times a day and keeping a log of the numbers. Any other Nov ‘20 mamas out there who have been diagnosed with GD? I am feeling shocked, sad, and scared for my baby 😞 I would love to hear from other moms in the same situation.

I got diagnosed last week, it’s a huge bummer. I panicked at first, but so far it seems like diet is managing it. The first few days were hard, but once we got low carb groceries in the house and I knew what my “carb budget” was per meal, it’s getting easier.
I have two eggs and toast for breakfast.
Today I had cottage cheese and whole wheat/low carb crackers for lunch, yesterday I had apples, crackers, and cheese.
I’ve been making big chicken salads for dinner, or making whole wheat/low carb wraps with the same chicken salad fillings. Or tonight we had chicken thighs and Brussel sprouts with a small side salad because I didn’t feel like making my own dinner.
My snacks are nuts, cheese, dark chocolate, sugar free treats, half an apple, etc. I’m fairy lucky because I live in an area with mostly elderly people and the local grocery store has a section just for diabetic-friendly foods.

I failed my 1 hour and just took my 3 hour yesterday. I will let you know how it goes when they call me back.

I was diagnosed a few weeks ago and have been diet controlled luckily. But my doctors have me on a high carb diet so I’m surprised so many people are low carb. I have to eat 30-60 grams of carbs with every meal and snack. 😳

Me. I failed by a good bit. They diagnosed me at 24 weeks with it. But the diet changes weren’t to bad and the finger pricking got easier. I have to check mine 4 times a day. Eating better and eating less. Breakfast is plain Greek yogurt with a little bit of honey and some berries or oatmeal with stevia. I found salads with spinach and lots of veggies and a protein make for really good filling lunches that don’t mess with my sugars. Switched to whole wheat bread and sandwiches don’t seem to be a problem. Dinners I didn’t need to change much. Swapped mashed potatoes for a baked sweet potato and don’t make heavily breaded protein often and always have lots of veggies or a side salad seems to help. I also drink a lot more water. It can be a little annoying. I hate when I just really want an ice cream or something but feel guilty that my numbers suck if I give in (which dr said was fine once in a while) so I found it easier just to not deal with the anxiety and forego splurging even rarely. Oh and snacks before bed are super important. I have a piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter on it every night before bed so I have some carbs and protein in my system. Apparently if your sugars dip to low at night (mine always do if I forget the snack) the liver makes extra sugar around 3/4 am and that will cause your morning fasting sugar to be too high. It’s inconvenient but you will manage, it’s only for a couple months :) you can do it.

I haven't heard from my doctor but got my results from my test via mychart. I failed my 1hr by 18 points. I'm sure he'll want me to take the 3hr. I'm super bummed.

I had it with my first, so they tested me with this baby at 13 weeks and failed it again.  I have been doing the diet since then and I’m 28 weeks. Hang in there. Definitely not as bad as you think after you get used to the diet itself.
