Looking for guidance on effective discipline methods

Growing up, my parents always disciplined up by spankings or punishments. I dont want to use these methods on my child as I feel they arent really effective. I want to be someone that my child trusts and can come to with anything, not someone that he is afraid of. Problem is, the spanking/punishment method is all i know since that's what i grew up with. There are so many articles/books, etc on discipline now, its hard to find what's actually effective and worth the read/money. Does anyone have any book suggestions or articles or discipline methods that worked for them or thought was really good? I'm just trying to narrow down my search.
