When you gave birth, did you tear or get an episiotomy?

Neither. I stretched and birthed the baby without tearing. With the right perineum support you will not tear.

I tore. I didn't feel it at all, and the recovery wasn't even bad. If I tore again I wouldn't care. But my mom didn't tear after me and my brother. The rest of my siblings she was fine.

I tore but it's really not as horrible as you imagine. :) Yes you're sore and swollen afterward and for at least a week, maybe a little more, but it's easily managed with ibuprofen and proper hygiene care (and ice packs :D). The body is amazing, it heals fast. Good luck! :) And yes definitely try the perineal massage technique!

Had both, episiotomy first, then still tore. Baby had a big head. Didn't help that I'm pretty damn small down there, but recovery was a breeze for me even without the sitz bath.

If you don't take an epidural and you tear is the stitches really painful?

I tore, but only needed a few stitches. It honestly wasn't so bad. I had an epidural, so I didn't feel that I was getting them. They took a while to heal, but I only used the ointment, spray and witch hazel pads that the hospital gave me. No ice packs or sitz baths. It healed fine. I did do perineal massage for the last few weeks. No idea if it ended up helping, but at least it felt like I did something.

Neither.  Baby came out naturally without me tearing or needing an episiotomy.  Hopefully this baby comes out the same way too.

I had episiotomy first time. My babies have very large heads! The midwife who offered was also the one who teaches the doctors who to suture up properly. She did a really good job. 
The actual procedure made me scream. Local anesthetic doesn't work on me, but I didn't tell them. Needed baby out! Pain was short lived.

I had two small tears right inside my vagina that happened as I was pushing my son's head out, but they didn't require stitches, so my midwife said they "didn't count" as tears. I was pretty worried about tearing, bc it sounds so painful, but I was surprised that in the moment, I really didn't care at all.. I just remember thinking calmly as it happened "oh, I must be tearing.. oh, well." so I wish I hadn't been so fearful of it. the recovery for the first few days afterward was the hardest part, and a warm peri bottle helped a lot while peeing. there are some great suggestions from other women about ways to avoid tearing, but I wanted to add that water birth is supposed to decrease the chances of it, too. :)

I tore with number 2 and 3. My first was a c section. I've done research and they say tearing is better than an episiotomy. Everything heals easier when it's a tear and not a cut. Obviously stretching would be the best option so go for the massage if you can. It's not guaranteed but making every effort not to tear or be cut would be the best option! 👍🏼
