genetic testing?

we have our 12 week appointment in about a week and a half. our doctor went over genetic testing and my husband and I still aren’t sure if we want to do it. have you done it? pros and cons for it? any advice would be great!!

We did the basic one which checked for the three main trisomy issues (Down Syndrome being one of those), it wouldn’t have changed how we proceeded with the pregnancy but would have allowed us to prepare, so we decided to do it.

Remember genetic testing doesn’t tell you your baby is healthy - it tells you if your baby may or may not have a chromosomal disorder!

My husband and I decided against it. There are risks that go along with the testing and they are not always accurate. We decided from the beginning that it didn’t matter what we may or may not find out, we were still keeping our baby, so there was really no point in getting it done for us.

We did all the available genetic and carrier testing. I like to be prepared, so if something had popped up I would have benefited from having time to educate myself and find support prior to the baby’s arrival. Everyone is different but I imagine postpartum being challenging and I wouldn’t want the added stress and shock of finding out something I could have had months to prepare for.

We chose to do the testing. I wanted to be prepared and find the right support system if issues were found. Plus it was fun knowing the gender early! Insurance didn't cover it so we had a dollar amount in mind we would be willing to pay out of pocket. Had it cost more we would have skipped the testing since I want considered high risk.

I did! Not going to lie to you though, I did have a lot of anxiety prior to it, it wouldn’t have changed anything but I felt scared. So I prayed and got over it and got it done and I’m glad I did. Finding out your baby is perfectly healthy is the best feeling, along with knowing the gender.
