My crying 3 year old

Parents.. need some advise here. My 3 year old son cries a lot. When he wants something it has to be his way or no other way. My husband and I started worrying about his attitude oh and he only wants to be with me and for me to do what he wants. I go outside for outdoor runs or even in the house and he cries the whole time until I get back then he complains about his head hurting because of all the crying. We talk to him to make him understand that things can always go his way but he doesn’t listen. It got to the point to that we give him a little spank but still doesn’t do anything. Is this about his age or something bigger then that?
