Is it such a bad thing?

That I had food & snacks upstairs when I lived with my in laws? We didnt pay rent or bills but whenever we bought some groceries they were gone right away. We were broke, my sister even bought groceries for us one day & I kept it in my room. We lived with his parents sister & brother. Apparently their looking down on me now 5 years later for doing that & keeping my shampoo upstairs as well instead of leaving it in the bathroom. His sister had taken my shampoo once & I asked my bf if he could ask for it back. He didnt want to but he ended up asking for it & she gave it back. I dont think I did a bad thing. Even though we didnt pay rent that wasnt my fault his mom chose not to make his son pay

It really depends. If you’re living with someone for free, I think it would be normal and expected to chip in on groceries, and what you bring home is for everyone. It’s part of keeping that household running. Were you not allowed to use their groceries at all? If you weren’t and you moved in bc you were broke, then yes I would understand you keeping your groceries away as you needed food to eat too. It really depends on the situation. 
As for the shampoo, that would be frustrating, but at least it’s back (:

It sounds like you had to protect your food & toiletries upstairs because if you didn’t it would get eaten or taken and you couldn’t afford to replace it.  So it was completely reasonable to bring it upstairs.
It also doesn’t sound like the in-laws asked you to contribute groceries or toiletries as part of the agreement for them having you stay with them.  If they wanted that, they,  being parents and adults could have asked you that and at that time you could have made a decision if that was something you could do or wanted to do.  That was never afforded to you, and them bringing it up as a problem, 5 years later seems unreasonable.  If they brought it up then, you could have responded back then, they didn’t and that’s on them.  Sorry they’re trying to manipulate this into something to criticize you over 😖

I think normally people in your situation would contribute somewhat as an appreciation for the in-laws generosity. They don’t need to ask for it. At least that’s how I see it.

I think that is a pretty cheap way to behave when you are living there rent free. They are sharing their home, providing cable, heat, hot water, the main food items, and I’m guessing g a myriad of other supplies like laundry detergent, cleaning products, toilet paper etc. and you are hoarding shampoo and chips? Personal items are just that personal items and wouldn’t be expected to be shared (like toothbrush, razors, deodorant) but if you bought snacks and aren’t willing to share or won’t leave your shampoo in the shower because you are afraid someone might use it, I think you are kinda tacky and free loafer. The fact they “didn’t make their son pay” isn’t your fault, but should be seen as an act of generosity and not meant with a stingy ungrateful attitude. In fact you should have probably been offering to contribute yourself monetarily or via chores.

When I lived with my dad he got me a mini fridge and a coffee maker for back in my room for days I wanted to stay in my room and be left alone ( I had recently had to move back in because of an ex , so I had some depression and I was having medical issues we weren’t sure of the cause ) and the days he wanted to have the living room so him and his gf can watch a movie with the big screen . He also would buy me certain chocolate he knew I loved and would hand it to me and say hurry up and hide it so Sarah doesn’t get it ( his gf ) they would also take certain snacks back in his room if he didn’t want it eaten . But we also shared food and other things like that without it being an issue . We just understood sometimes certain things we wanted to enjoy before it was all eaten 😂

When I lived with my mum and dad.. I hid things.. simply because they would take it.. I'm not talking about chocolate or none essentials but meals and stuff.. like u.. can't afford to replace.. if it was the other way round.. I would be embrassed that I even took that persons belongings.. even if they are family.. it doesn't give that person the right to do that.

I lived with my MIL for like 6 months before me and my husband bought our house. It was her, his step dad, my husbands 2 brothers and sister. So in total there were 7 of us living there. They ate a lot and if I bought food they would eat it fast asf so I did the same lol. My MIL never cared

I live with my in-laws and if I buy certain snacks, I’ll take them upstairs because there are so many people in this house so food goes fast. As for shampoo, I buy my own stuff from a licensed warehouse because I’m a licensed hairstylist and nobody else cares to use that kind of stuff

I mean, you could have just talked to them? I don’t think it’s odd to keep some snacks and stuff, but it sounds like you were keeping entire shopping trips worth of stuff, and it is definitely strange to keep your shampoo out of the bathroom. BUT I don’t blame you since they would use your stuff, I just think if you had said “hey please don’t eat my chips/use my shampoo” they probably would have stopped
