Dental hygienist here 🙋🏼‍♀️It looks very typical of an aphthous ulcer or a “canker sore”.. warm salt water will take care of it quickly.. if he gets them often he should find his triggers. A lot of the time it’s acidic foods, sometimes dairy/eggs and also an ingredient in tooth paste called sodium laurel sulfate (SLS).

An ulcer. Like a scratch inside his mouth. Caused by either stress. Or eating something crunchy. 
Swish with warmed salt water twice a day. Stay away from tomatoes, (ketchup too), lemons, oranges and spicy roll better. Should take a few dsys if caused by trauma. Or a week if caused by stress.

Like others said, canker sore. And I second the warm salt water. I had one for a week and it was only getting worse. I coincidentally had a dentist appointment, and they told me warm salt water. 2 days later, it was completely gone.
