Is it necessary...?

I know it probably is, but what are all of your thoughts on the hep B and vitamin K shot right after your baby is born? I was told hep B does not have to be done immediately after, but a lot of doctors really push the vitamin K. I'm a FTM, so I'm not exactly sure of what would be best.

We've refused both every time. 
Hep B is an STD...I find it asinine to be giving that to a baby before it leaves the hospital, especially a baby born to healthy mom & dad in a committed relationship/marriage.

Hep B is a blood borne pathogen and you don't necessarily have to have it right at birth. I don't remember that being an option until my sons three month visit. Vitamin K is super important because it helps the baby's blood clot. Babies have a major drop in red blood cells when they are born because now they all the sudden have to make the cells themselves and are not getting anything from you.

The vitamin k shot is synthetic,  they recommend it because vitamin k helps with blood clotting, and is produced by bacteria in our intestines and baby's don't have the bacteria necessary for the first few days (approx3) so they recommend it in case anything should happen to cause bleeding in the first few days of life. I think I read during my last pregnancy that if you consume vitamin k rich food in the weeks before birth it passes the placenta, but I can't remember for sure, I would suggest talking to your dr. And doing your own research.

If I were you I would do some research on the vitamin K shot. The "vitamin" is extremely synthetic and also much much more than your baby needs. It can be toxic to your baby. I'm not saying do or don't get it for your baby I'm only asking that you do your own research- pros and cons on the vitamin k.

Our pediatrician strongly urges vit k bc of clot factors bc babies don't really have much when born. It was figured out when babies were dying from brain bleeds and such so I find that it's probably a good call to get plus it's a vitamin.
