Why is the concept of virginity such a big thing?

I don't really get it...guys aren't really told that their first time must be special etc and that they should lose their virginity to someone they love, so why are girls?

Why is it such a big issue, when the concept was created by men years ago for the purpose of judging women?

I think i have a very different view than most people on this app, but that's just me. I used to believe virginity was this big sacred thing, but the older i got and the more ready for sex i got, the less of a big deal it was. To me, it was special in the sense that i got to lose it to my boyfriend, but it's definitely not a big deal. I don't think about it all the time, and i doubt I'm going to "remember it vividly" as i age. I'm not saying it wasnt nice because it was and i love my boyfriend very much, but to me virginity is just a popular social construct

For me, doing it with someone I love just strengthens the connection/bond between us, but I'm a hopeless romantic stuck in a hook up culture.

Personally, for me only, sex is sacred. I don't care what other people do, but it's a proven fact that it can be a very big importance mentally and emotionally to some people. You do you, just be safe.

You will remember your first time forever. It'll find a way to pop into your head when doing random things. It's your choice whether the memory will haunt you or if you cherish it.

I always just figured "lose it to someone you love" because if I accidentally got pregnant, man it better be with someone I want to stick around. I turned down two guys in high school for exactly that reason, I knew I couldn't rely on them to stick around if things got tough. Then again, when I lost it I was tracking my fertility and not using condoms (that wasn't super smart), so the possible pregnancy thing was a big deal. My first time wasn't anything magical, it hurt like hell and we didn't know what we were doing, but I loved him more than anything. People have sex for all kinds of reasons, just make sure whatever reason you lose your virginity is a reason YOU'RE good with.
