Guy I like only talks to me doesn't text?

Okay so I'm just a little confused with my situation: I'm 18 in college and I've been friends with this guy I met in one my classes for a couple months now and we just started hanging out more "just the two of us" (going to music concerts together or just walking and talking after class a lot) he doesn't really care to text, snapchat, etc. but he always talks to me in person when we see each other. Is it normal for a guy to not answer texts and such a lot but talk to you in person more often? Would it not be a good idea to ask him if he wants to go to dinner or a movie? Is that too much/too soon?
