Are we a Christian nation?

Question

I hear often that we are a Christian nation with Christian values. While I don't agree with that characterization, I'm not sure how others justify it.  I saw this quote from Colbert and found it really fitting and would love to hear explanations.  He said:

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that he commanded is to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it."

This is not an attack on Christianity and I'm sorry if you take offense. That is not my intention. I would like to understand what I feel is a misalignment of values in this country.

I wouldn't say there is anything left of values here in America when it comes to Christian nation.. 
I feel like America is trying to spread this new age , free spirit, one love, hippie stuff

Now, we don't hide as much now that there are laws against murdering non-Christians. Our ancestors came to this land to escape from religious tyranny, only to find it here as well. Tyranny isn't the true Christian way of doing things - as you stated in your post. And since there as always been tyranny here against anyone non-Christian, I find it safe to say that America has never been a Christian country.

Christian or not loving the neighbor as one loves oneself and being selfless should be taught and expressed more through out the nation. We have this attitude now "it's ever man for himself" ...

I'm Christian and wouldn't classify this nation as Christian. I do, however, think that originally our legal system was based on some basic principles: don't kill or steal, respect those with authority (whether that be your parents or your president), and keep your horny little hands off of your friend's spouse. If you're asking about why we don't want a flood of refugees, I think I actually hold the unpopular opinion that we should set up a basic screening system and take as many as we can handle. If I were a terrorist, I would be much more likely to sneak in illegally or recruit somebody born here. Anyway, while we're at it, we can overhaul the whole immigration system or lack thereof...

As a Christian I do not consider America to be a Christian nation as in the majority of people truly follow Christ. I know a lot of our laws were based on Christian values but in the last 50 years or so our society has become extremely secular. I would say well over 70% of the people who claim to be "Christian" do not actually follow the Bible, the teachings of Christ or really have anything to do with the church. They may have a general sense of like well I was raised in the church and I believe in God but it doesn't really affect my daily life other than I try to be a good person. Due to this mentality I really don't think we can call the U. S. a Christian country. Our leaders don't make laws based in Christianity, our voters don't vote based on Christianity and in general living a truly Christ-following life is considered abnormal. It's kind of like our President canceling the National Day of Prayer but then sending out a "Pray for Paris" initiative: our county is only "Christian" when it's convenient and God is only spoken of during times of tragedy.

Christians technically discovered North America lol but North America so multicultural now so I don't really consider it a christan nation although I'm christan myself but a lot has changed in 200 years lol
