First period after giving birth

It started off with spotting for a few days nothing too crazy than all the sudden for the last three days I'm having my first period after giving birth it is sooo heavy and I'm cramping bad. Soaking through pads because I'm still scared to wear a tampon yet .. has this happened to anyone where their first period was extremely heavy like this?
