What is your opinion on grandparents picking their name?

So my MIL desperately wants our baby to refer to her and my FIL as Lolli and Pop. I loathe this idea. I cannot stand the thought of referring to her as Lolli. It is just so dumb to me (obviously I feel strongly about this). I'm okay with the normal variations of grandma and grandpa, like meemaw and peepaw, mimi and papa. That sort of thing. Lolli is so dumb to me and I want to tell her that she can refer to herself that way, but i'm not. Until she picks a more realistic one, I will refer to her as grandma. Am I being mean and am I wrong?

My mil suggested this also and I straight up said no, that’s dumb. You guys aren’t a lollipop wth. It hurt her feelings I’m sure, but in all honesty that’s dumb as hell.

Ngl that is dumb. Lolli? That’s like a nickname with friends bc of an inside joke, not something you name yourself. My parents are Grammy and Grampy and my in-laws are just grandma and grandpa.

For me, I would NOT want to have to spend 3-4 years referring to her as Lolli just to find out the kid doesn't want to call her that anyways. It is really stupid.

My FIL wanted them to call him SOB! Silly old bastard.. um no!! 
We told him that the kids chose what ti call him, not him. Although in reality they don’t as they can’t talk for years haha.

If thats what makes her happy I would just do it. All our babies grandparents are going to pick out their names and they can choose whatever they want because that's between them and their granchild.

I haven’t heard that one before! I find that the kids generally pick the names 🤷‍♀️ The grandparents can suggest something, but the kids will say whatever they want & are able to.

My mum refuses to be called any variation of grandma at all and demands our families kids call her Kate. We just call her Grammy to them anyway behind her back 😂
