Toddler transitions before/after baby?
We’re about 5 months out from the arrival of our second baby and we have two big transitions for my almost-3-year-old coming up: potty training and moving out of the crib.
1. Potty training - He is not interested at all, and is not showing signs of readiness. I know some good techniques from working in daycare with toddlers so I’m not worried about the “how” but more the “when” of it all. I know with some kids readiness is like an on/off switch and usually when they decide they’re interested is the best time.
2. Toddler bed - We have a mini crib so we were planning on waiting until he hit the weight limit, or it was unsafe for him to be in it (ie. Climbing out), or we needed it for the next baby. He is a peanut and prob won’t be 35lbs for a long time, and has never tried to climb out. Also, once he had the communication skills to understand to stay in bed, which he does, but he’s also a wiggly kid and idk if he actually will stay lol. If he ever has a nightmare and comes in our bed he moves around CONSTANTLY and gets up and down and has a really difficult time settling. Also if he has a toy in his crib he’ll stay awake for hours, so having access to his room is another concern lol.
I know both are totally doable, and will just take some adjusting and work/patience. But I also feel like we should start before the baby arrives so he’s not going through so many major transitions at once. Especially in the beginning when we’re not going to be able to give him as much focused attention.
5 months also seems like both such a long and such a short time lol. I’m already feeling like it’s a time crunch, but I also know that’s almost half a year for him and by that time, of even half of that time, his maturity level will be different than it is now.
I guess I’m just looking to hear other people’s experiences with making big toddler transitions while pregnant or postpartum. And maybe some reassurance that we can handle it haha. 🙈😂
