Holidays

Since thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner, what are some traditions you ladies have for holidays (any holiday you celebrate). We celebrate the commercial meaning of pretty much every holiday. We love the gifts and food and (when we were back home) all the family being together. Now that I am grown up and moved away I really miss my mom making our favorite foods.

My parents have always hosted an open house for their friends (we've never had extended family close by) on Christmas Eve, but it's been shrinking in the last few years as their friends retire and move away. Now that I'm married and my in-laws are in town I'm going to be hosting the Christmas Eve open house for our friends and family to come celebrate with us and I couldn't be more excited to carry on this tradition. It's nice to be "family" for people who don't have extended family near by.

As a vegetarian, I would just say that my Thanksgiving traditions got way better after I married a chef. ;) As near as I can tell, Thanksgiving is a food holiday, and my food now makes it worth giving thanks for.I don't know what all generations we're in, but maybe some of you remember all the Christmas specials from back in the day? Rudolph and Garfield and Charlie Brown and the Claymation one and so forth... we have them all taped on some VHS from the '90s and absolutely must watch them every year. It's pure nostalgic torture.

Our families are not religious to begin with, for us holidays are just a day to slow down, enjoy each others' company, and eat, lol.

I like to let the kids get excited that the Easter Bunny came or that Santa brought them gifts. My oldest knows that those are fake but she plays along for the younger ones. I think I like the magic of most holidays. The amazement on my kids' faces is the best thing in the world.

We only do the Christmas tree, only because I like decorating. My mom does not. Easter Bunny, not really. My mom would buy me a basket full of candy, but she'd tell me it was from her. I think I'll do the same.

Do you put up a Christmas tree or have the Easter Bunny visit your kids?
