Did my middle school crush like me?

Ok in middle school I was friends with this guy and me and him were really close in 6th because we had band together and tbh he was like my only friend and we always say together in class and I remember on the first day he talked to me first because I had a cornet and not a trumpet even tho I was out with the trumpet section and he said you know that’s not a trumpet right and I said yes and I always thought he was annoying and then after a while me and him were sitting together everyday just talked in class all day I remember we were talking one time and we weren’t supposed to and he got a lunch detention because of me and I said sorry and he’s like it’s ok not your fault and then in band we had to get new seats because everyone was talking and the teacher put me right beside him and I thought that was amazing. And he would walk with me to my bus and everything and we would just talk and at the end of 6th grade we went on a field trip and it was to a roller rink and I kept falling and he was like you want help every time that he would pass me and I thought he had feelings for me and then 7th grade came we didn’t have any classes together so we weren’t as close but one day I decided to message him on hangouts and we talked on there and I told him I liked him and he said he did too but I didn’t know if it was as friends or more so I asked him and he said I like like you and that was cute but the thing is he never asked me out or anything and every time we saw each other he would put his head down and look away and I was so confused and then we never talked again after that in 7th or 8th and then came 9th I moved schools but my friend was still at the high school with him and they we’re talking in band and he said that he dated someone and my friend said who and he said me but he never asked me out so I don’t understand how we could’ve dated if he didn’t ask to be his girlfriend or anything. Idk what he meant. Your thoughts?
