There are tons of reasons why a period might be irregular, but it basically boils down to irregular ovulation. That can sometimes be addressed by a doctor. Tracking your cycle using OPKs and/or BBT can help you know when your fertile window is.

“Irregular” means different things to different people. 
Sometimes they say that a person has irregular periods if they don’t have a period approximately every 30ish days. Well some people have periods every 40-50days on a pretty regular frequency but if you use the 30-day mark then it seems irregular. Does that make sense?
As long as a person has sex when they are ovulating, then they can get pregnant. With irregular periods, it can be tricky to determine when ovulation is happening. OPK and tracking BBT can help figure that out. 
The best advice will be gleaned from a conversation with your doctor.

There are many reasons. I’ve always had irregular periods & I got pregnant naturally with both my kids. Both surprises & actually using preventative measures that failed too 😂
