FYI To VBAC or not to VBAC?

Meredith

I had a section scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, but little lady had other plans. Monday night, my water broke around 10pm (cue grandparents converging in the middle of the night to pick up dogs and stay with 4yo 🤦🏼‍♀️ best laid plans right?).

Got to the hospital and I did not have one of those slow leaks as they say... gushing all over the walk into the L&D triage, myself etc (tmi?).

I was having mild contractions no pain really just intense Braxton Hicks feeling. They started to pick up by 11 or so and I decided to see how far I would progress and try a VBAC while my OB got a good nights sleep... wanted her fresh for the delivery!

I labored for 8 hours and with consistent contractions 3 min apart pretty much the whole time I made it from 1.5 cm when I got to the hospital to a whopping “just under 2 cm” (I’m convinced they were lying to me to make me feel better).

Long story short and the point of this post, what I didn’t know was that when you are doing VBAC they do not give you the same amount of pitocin as a typical birth meaning my already slow labor could not be sped up like one would want. Looking at a long day of prolonged labor and potentially more “failure to progress”

I went with the C-section. It was now morning and my OB was available as was an OR. Good thing I didn’t have second thoughts she was born about an hour after I made the decision!

It worked out great, the 8 hrs of labor thinned my uterus making the surgery better with less blood loss so there’s that! And I got a beautiful rainbow baby girl out of the whole thing 😉
