How many sleepers do I need?

Question

Hi - I’m a FTM due 1/12/21. How many sleepers do I need in newborn size and 0-3 months?  Also how many onesies do I need? I’ve heard you want to dress your baby in one additional layer than what you need, so I plan to layer a long sleeve onesie underneath everything.
I live in the suburbs of Chicago so it’ll be cold the first few months of babies life. Thanks!

I’m from north dakota and both my babies will be winter babies. (My son will be 3 in the beginning of December.) I recommend like 10 Footie sleepers in 0-3. Start with just a couple in newborn and if baby is born less than 8lbs, stock up on some more. My son was born 7.5 lbs and he stayed in newborn for a full month! He wore sleepers all day everyday for the first 8 weeks, unless I wanted to put him in a cute outfit to meet people or go to the doctor 😂 I did not layer under the sleepers but used a lot of fleece ones and it was perfect. 
Look into a car seat cover as well for the winter. I would dress my son in a fleece sleeper, buckle him in, tuck a blanket around him, and put on the car seat cover just for the walk to the car (sometimes -20 degrees!) and he was good like that. I would do socks under the footie sleepers for added warmth, and a hat if leaving the house as well.

I usually do 5 newborn sleepers just in case (my first two babies were huge) and 10 0-3 and 3-6. I'm due 1/23 and expect she'll be in 3-6 before winter is up. I typically keep winter babies in sleepers and zip up jammies with feet so I don't buy onesies unless I want a few cute long sleeve ones to go with pants, but they're more a hassle than anything else when babies are little. A sleeper with a thin jacket and a fuzzy blanket will be fine. Remember baby can't wear coats or puffy outfits in the carseat.

I would go with 7-10 sleepers and onesies/outfits. That'll give you a week's worth plus extra for blow outs and spit ups. I like using plain white onesies as an under later, mainly short sleeve though because long sleeve will ride up when you put another onesie over. Definitely don't buy a ton of newborn size though because they grow out of that size fast.

Babies grow out of newborn quickly!! So do maybe a handful of newborn sleepers. I personally prefer and have always used the gowns! So convenient to just lift up for diaper changes and not worry about zippers and snaps 🙂

I prefer sleep sacks. Fleece for at night, lighter cotton style for day. Anything that is easy to unzip for changes. AVOID onesies with leg snaps. It’s like trying to herd cats. Wiggly babies hate to hold still for snaps. Zippers all. The. Way.
